Mary Rose's Ginger Cookies  
1 cup white sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1 egg
1/4 cup dark molasses
2 cups flour, sifted
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. powdered ginger
1/4 tsp. cloves

Cream together sugar and shortening, add egg and molasses. Sift flour, soda and spices into sugar mixture. Roll in balls and flatten. Then dip in sugar and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
