The Phantom's Virtual Postcard Tour Continues...

When you cross the bridge from Portland to Vancouver, Washington, and continue on up Interstate 5 the scenery gets even more beautiful, especially if you like looking at Douglas Fir trees. Take the turn-off to Mt. St. Helens if you've got a few extra hours. It's definitely worth the trip.
Mt. St. Helens
This is not an old postcard but I wanted to include it anyhow. It's a photo of Mt. St. Helens after the volcano eruption. As you can see, one side of the mountain has been blown away. The Park Service has built a beautiful memorial to this natural disaster and I enthusiastically recommend it.

Mt. Rainier
Speaking of mountains, here's an old "Real Photo" postcard of Mt. Rainier, Washington.
I guess the Pacific Northwest is really all about mountains!

You can tell that you're getting close to Seattle when Mt. Rainier begins to loom in the distance. Another indication will be the heavy traffic. Once you reach Tacoma, it's eyes on the road and get a good grip on the steering wheel. Big city traffic ahead. Nothing like the way it was at the turn of the century!

Seattle
This postcard is titled "First Avenue, Seattle, Washington." It must be the early 1900s because the wagons are all horse-drawn and the women are wearing long dresses. The sign in the lower right-hand corner says "Alaska Outfitters." That's for the Yukon gold rush. This card goes way back!

Here's an old postcard of Seattle at night. I can tell it's an old card because
there's no Space Needle, and the backside of the card says use a one cent stamp
for domestic mail. Hmm.

Puget Sound
And our final Washington State postcard features Puget Sound by Moonlight -- and the ferry boat, S. S. Indianapolis, most likely heading for Canada. One hundred years later, ferries are still a very important part of the Washington State transportation system. It's a very well run, dependable, and even rather romantic way to get around at times. Be sure to take some ferry boat rides while you're in the area.
